Our Story
From pasture to living soil
For decades, this land was cattle pasture. Years of grazing and heavy hooves packed the earth hard. Rain ran off instead of soaking in, topsoil washed away, and the forest that once covered these hills gave way to a single layer of grass. What was left was quiet, tired ground.
We saw it differently. Soil isn’t just dirt. It’s a living system, and given the chance, it heals.
So we started there. We broke up the compaction with deep-rooted plants instead of machines. We fed the ground with compost, mulch and fallen biomass. We planted in layers, from ground cover to fruit trees to canopy, the way a tropical forest grows on its own. Slowly, the soil got darker, softer and full of life again.
Today the land holds water. Birds, insects and pollinators have come back. Where there was one kind of grass, there are now hundreds of species growing together. And it feeds us. Every harvest that reaches the Farm Shop grew from ground that was once written off.
